Work Experience

At Samuel Laycock we recognise that our pupils need to experience the ‘world of work’ in order for them to understand what potential job sectors they would like to aspire towards. Early understanding of a potential career helps our careers team to work with families in order to source the most appropriate post 16 placement for each individual.

As all our pupils have different levels of independence and confidence we have organised work experience into external and internal placements.

External work experience

During the 2023-24 academic year Samuel Laycock will be setting up for the first-time external work experience for Key Stage 4 pupils.

Each Pathway will identify existing and new partnerships with local organisations who are willing to facilitate work experience. The placement will be directly linked to the job sector associated with the Pathway. For example, the Sports & Outdoor Pathway and linking up with the National Football museum in Manchester City Centre.

The Pathways

Sports & Outdoors

Horticuture

Performing Arts

Food Technology

Digital

Living Skills

Communication

When pupils visit the work experience provider they will be accompanied by a member of staff who is acting in a job coach role. The staff’s responsibility is to observe the pupil’s performance and link up with the work experience provider in order for each pupil to receive personalised feedback on their performance. This will highlight their positive contributions throughout the day and identify skills that they may still need to work on.

Internal work experience

Internal work experience is offered to both KS3 and KS4 pupils. The aim is for pupils to identify a job role they would like to take responsibility for over an agreed period of time.

The staff team work with developing the skills required to fulfil the job role and provide feedback throughout the process to improve the pupil’s practice. Once the placement is over the pupils receive a certificate for their record of achievement file, the certificate identifies the skills they have been working on.
